8-bed dorm.jpg

Since 2016 we’ve been exploring how we could redesign the traditional dorm bunk bed.

We weren’t satisfied with the options available at the time, so we decided to take the design into our own hands.

Our priority in choosing a design was:

  1. 實用方便性 practical and convenient to use

We also considered a few other factors.

  • 如何使人容易爬上爬下 how to get up and down easier
  • 如何提升客人選擇睡上鋪的機率 how to make our beds more appealing to guests

If you travel often, you’re probably familiar with the traditional hostel bunk bed.

Most of them are designed as below:

We struggled to find a designer who was as passionate about this project as we were.

stairs/ledder/dorm/bunk/designing/hostel/bunk/net/wood/children room/creative……

For many designers, it wasn’t a big enough project to commit their time too.

But we felt strongly about creating a functional and unique design for our hostel.
In addition to be co-owner of Homey Hostel, I’m also a backpacker! Not only did I research online, I also considered the different experiences I’ve had in other countries.
Because of my extensive research, most of the ideas that designers presented were already familiar to me.
It’s possible that some design companies didn’t put much though into it, so we kept searching.

We even met up with

>famous design company

> design studios

>creative associations in universities

>design departments in schools around Asia
With each potential idea we spent a lot time introducing the concept of our hostel, design ideas, functionality, design goals, etc.
At last, I deeply understood

it is hard to get a awesome idea
It is easy to improve the convenience for guests
It is much more difficult to convince a new guest to choose our bed
After reviewed hundred of pictures on internet
search key word

stairs/ledder/dorm/bunk/designing/hostel/bunk/net/wood/children room/creative……
We even considered some crazy ideas, for example

>Phonics Phone
stay on bed, then you can talk to anyone in other bed.

>star sky
Only the official guests can see the beautiful roof

>hammock chair
A special facility for Homey guests only

>table

facilities only for top bed

Most bunk beds don’t have tables! Maybe if we added some it would make us more unique?
One day, I saw the picture of floating stairs
It was use in a lobby with a very high ceiling.
The stairs looked like they didn’t have any supports, like they were floating into the sky
The view is so unexpected.
Could we use it for bunk beds? I started dreaming about it…..

Creative idea, but safety is the most important.

We discuss with some professionals to see if it was possible.

<<continually scroll down to read story>>

We were so excited to find out that we could turn our idea into reality.

This year we launched the floating stair design for hostel bunks, the first in the world.

Easier to climb, quieter so you don’t bother your downstairs bunk mate, and comfortable to use!

Creative designing, solved problem, and a more interesting experience.

We used sturdy steel for safety

IMG_5887.JPG

FullSizeRender 77.jpg

Each staircase is welded securely

FullSizeRender 75.jpg

We tested each step to ensure safety.

IMG_5890.JPGIMG_5896.JPG

After our first test, we added extra support to ensure that the steps wouldn’t bend.

FullSizeRender 73.jpg

We also wanted to make sure the steps were comfortable.

So we decide to use wood steps with rounded edges.

FullSizeRender 76.jpg

To make sure that our wooden steps would last a million uses we did some more designing.

FullSizeRender 78.jpg

Our floating stairs aren’t just for climbing to the top bunk. Use it as a seat or shelves!

Dorms are a good space to make friends. You never know who you’ll meet before check in.

With this new design, we have more seats in the dorm now!

Stairs are like seats, easily sit down to chat with your roommate to make friends.

This is what we love to see!

Efficiency because of Good designing, and it keeps the hostel spirit “make friends” “sharing”

After read it, don’t you want to try it??

But if you’re tired from exploring Taipei, just climb up the stairs and close the curtain to get some rest and privacy!
